  Industry Trends and Growth
This is a very exciting time in our industry, full of potential growth and new possibilities. In the past ten years, our industry has evolved from offering simple print services such as black and white and spot color, to providing sophisticated, graphic communications solutions. These solutions may also include value-added services such as one to one marketing (variable data), signs and banners, mailing services and ad specialties.

The printing industry continues to grow as printed materials are extensively used by businesses, organizations and the community at large. Printing is America's third largest manufacturing industry and employs over 1 million people in more than 35,000 establishments, attributing to more than $160 billion in sales. The industry continues to grow at 3-5% per year, with newer, value-added services such as full color digital printing and mailing services growing at 6-20% per year.

Digital printing offers numerous advantages to customers such as quicker turnaround, the ability to produce smaller full-color, high- quality runs less expensively, as well as customized marketing campaigns. In fact, the retail value of digital color printing rose to $4.3 billion in 2000, a growth rate of 1,000 percent since 1997, according to CAP Ventures.

The Internet has significantly impacted the way our customers do business, positively affecting their printing purchases. In fact, a recent study by CAP Ventures indicated that in many cases, print volume actually increases when the Internet is used for marketing and communication. Today’s customers enjoy the benefits of more sophisticated e-commerce technologies offered by some print providers such as electronic file transfer, online ordering, proofing and print management capabilities.

As a result of advanced print technologies and marketing-driven growth possibilities, additional career opportunities have been created for those with little or no printing experience. In addition, the print and graphic communications industry offers longstanding career advantages of:
> Short hours – working only business hours Monday-Friday
> Business to business work
> Manageable account base, with a high percentage of repeat purchases
> Often a smaller staff to manage
> Materials that will not spoil
